Manitoba Chapter
Chapter History
On a rainy day in San Diego California in February 2009 looking for something to do, I read an advertisement poster taped to a light pole down by the harbour for the Firehouse World Training Conference and Expo happening that day. My wife and I proceeded to the location to check it out. With only one hour left to visit the Expo floor and the $20 per person entrance fee, we were hesitant to continue on. However, I could see all the Fire Trucks and in particular a beautiful new Aerial Apparatus inside and I could not resist!
We quickly went past booth after booth trying to take as much in as we could in an hour and at the very last corner there was a booth called Firefighters for Christ International. Being followers of Jesus, we had to check it out. I ended up talking with an older gentleman during the entire visit to the booth, and as he spoke to me something was burning inside of me. They invited us to a breakfast the next morning. My wife and I were both up most of the night and we agreed that something very powerful was drawing us to that breakfast and that we must attend. I learned at that breakfast that the man I had been speaking with was John White, the President of Firefighters for Christ, and most importantly a true follower and disciple of Jesus Christ, the real deal!
Firefighters for Christ Manitoba was born a short time later after that trip when myself and a couple other Firefighters that were now meeting regularly to pray and study scripture together at the Fire Station received this verse.
Ecclesiastes 11:4 NLT
Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.
We had no idea what saying “YES” to Jesus, "we will do this," was going to entail, but we obediently moved forward formally stepping out and announcing Firefighters for Christ MB to the Steinbach Fire Department explaining the call we felt we are answering to encourage and reach Firefighters for Jesus Christ not only in Manitoba but across Canada.
Matthew 28:19-20 NLT
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. [20] Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Today, we have many members of Firefighters for Christ MB spread out across the Province taking part in everything from regular weekly gatherings to praying and studying scripture together, International Mission Trips, FFC International Conference at Hume Lake California, to hosting breakfasts, pool parties, picnics, weekend retreats and our favourite thing to do, helping others within our communities and beyond that are in need of all sorts of assistance.
Its almost easier to answer what we are not a apart of, or at least willing to be apart of. As we were always told and mentored by John White, we just GO, we just SHOW UP! I believe Jesus has also told us the very same thing, and so that’s what we do, we GO.
